Melvyn Ivv's bachelor of arts project "The Flower Only Dreams In Total Darkness" takes a look at the perception of alienation in our young generation. Alienation as a dichotomy to freedom of self-actualisation under growing economic inequality and material condition in the social hierarchy. The project points its lens at the very cracks in the surface of meritocracy and its symptoms, the myth of great opportunity, great promises that get drowned out by the economic system’s mode of constant crisis. The project meditates on an approach to externalise the internal toll on the individual psyche through associative imagery on the reality principle according to Lacan, Derrida's & Fisher's hauntology, narrative fragmentation, contextualising motives of the sublime in romanticism in relation to Adorno & Horkheimers remembrance of nature within the subject.
